Good news for users and developers, Adobe and Google jointly launch an open source Chinese, Japanese and Korean font

Adobe and Google jointly released an open source font for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, including 65,535 hieroglyphs, which is currently one of the largest fonts for East Asian characters. This font is currently available for free in Google Fonts and Adobe font libraries.

Due to different considerations, the marketing departments of the two companies named this font differently. Adobe called it Source Han Sans, while Google used it as part of Noto Pan-Unicode and called it Noto Sans CJK (CJK: Chinese, Japanese, Korean).

The total size of this font is 19MB, including 7 thicknesses, supporting Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Greek letters, Latin letters and Cyrillic letters.

The development process of this font lasted for 4 years. In addition to Adobe and Google, font development companies from China, Japan, and South Korea also participated. Adobe was responsible for the initial stage of design, and later Google also participated in the specific design of the font and borne the main costs of the second stage.

The main designer of the font is Ryoko Nishizuka, an Adobe designer from Japan, and 100 people participated in the project. The number of people served can reach 1.5 billion, accounting for nearly 1/4 of the world's total population. Since the font is open source and free, users also have the right to modify it, such as adding Vietnamese text, etc.

It seems a bit unusual for Adobe to make an open source font. It hopes to use this font to optimize its own design software; and Google will use this font for Google products and the developer community.
