Today, we recommend another free commercial font to you. It is for the Traditional Chinese world, called: Taipei Heidi.
Why is there Taipei Black Body?
Is there a lack of useful (and free) basic fonts in the Traditional Chinese world?
Although the current free Traditional Chinese fonts comply with the standards of the education departments of Taiwan and Hong Kong, they are not suitable for all printing needs. Most printing-style fonts are copyrighted fonts, and users need to pay to obtain them.
Although Source Han Sans or Noto Sans CJK launched by Adobe and Google is widely used in the Traditional Chinese world, some people have pointed out that its TC/TW version has design problems and is not suitable for printing.
Hanzi Casting Therefore, we invested in the modification of open source fonts, based on Siyuan Heibo, to provide Traditional Chinese users with printing style Heibo suitable for different situations. Taipei Black Body is the first product under this concept.
How to download?
Even if traditional Chinese characters are not used frequently, free fonts are always useful. The download method is very simple. Visit the homepage of Hanzi Foundry: https://sites.google.com/view/jtfoundry/, hover the mouse over "Chinese (Taiwan)" in the upper right corner, Select "Download" in the menu to enter the download page.
Please understand before downloading:
1. This is a Beta (public beta) version. Hanzi Foundry will continue to improve the fonts to meet the needs of more Traditional Chinese users, and welcomes feedback from users.
2. Licensing scheme: Taipei Heidi is licensed based on Siyuan Heidi’s SIL Open Font License 1.1, allowing free use for personal and commercial purposes. Users can modify or distribute fonts based on the authorized content, but they must comply with the provisions of SIL Open Font License 1.1. For example, they must not change the font name and claim it as a personal work.
3. The meaning of “there is almost no shortage of Chinese characters”: Taipei Black Type is based on the KR version of Siyuan Black Type, which contains the Chinese characters needed for daily life in the Traditional Chinese world, and is unified into a printing style as much as possible. It retains all Chinese characters (including Chinese simplified characters, Japanese kanji, Korean kanji) and Japanese kana supported by Siyuan Heibo, but some Chinese characters not included in the KR version will remain written in the TW or CN version.
4. The file format is TTF to ensure compatibility with different operating systems and environments. Taipei Blackbody has been tested normally in Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Cloud, MacOS and other environments.
Taipei Black Body Development Plan:
Phase 1 (ends before June 2019): Provides 3 font weights (light, regular, bold) to avoid programmatic bolding and meet the basic needs of web and graphic design.
Phase 2 (ends before 2020.12): Complement the remaining 4 weights (extralight, normal, medium, heavy) to meet more advanced design needs. The currently downloadable font weights are light, regular, and bold.
