Spain's Supreme Court on Monday sentenced nine separatist leaders from Catalonia to between nine and 13 years in prison for sedition and other charges, Reuters reported.
According to Reuters, the court found Oriol Junqueras and eight other leaders guilty of sedition and misuse of public funds. In what was described as a landmark verdict, three defendants were found guilty of disobedience and were not sentenced to jail time.
The longest prison term among the nine sentenced defendants was 13 years, for Oriol Junqueras, the former deputy leader of the Catalan regional government. Carme Forcadell, the former president of the Catalan parliament, was sentenced to 11 years and six months in prison, while five other former ministers of the Catalan government were sentenced to between 10 years and six months. 12 years in prison. Two influential Catalan civic leaders, Jordi Sánchez and Jordi Cusat, were also sentenced to nine years in prison, while three remaining leaders facing lesser charges avoided jail but were still sentenced.
