What are the differences between different image formats: JPG, PNG, and GIF?

We work in weak current projects. When we open the photo library on our mobile phones, we find that they are full of equipment photos or construction photos of various projects. There are really only a few photos of people. Today I want to talk to you about the photo format issue. A picture can be stored in a variety of formats. Why are some tens of KB and some hundreds of MB? Some are still and some are played in a loop with several pictures? Today I will introduce four common image formats. It is not only popular science, but also very helpful to students who are learning PS and other image processing software~

01JPG

The full name of JPG is JPEG, which is a relatively common image format. It is characterized by high compression ratio and small generated file size. However, its shortcomings are also obvious. When editing and re-saving JPEG files, JPEG will mix the quality of the original image data, and this decrease is cumulative. For example, if you receive a JPG image that has been forwarded many times on WeChat, you will find that the image is much blurrier than the original image and has a green cast.

02PNG

It has a high compression ratio and a small file size. Its design purpose is to try to replace the GIF and TIFF file formats, while adding some features that the GIF file format does not have. (GIF and TIFF will be mentioned later.)

Therefore, PNG combines the advantages of both and can support the production requirements of compression without distortion, transparent background, and gradient images. It is now widely used in PS software and the Internet.

03GIF

Many people think that GIF refers to animated pictures. In fact, GIF not only includes animated GIFs, but also static GIFs. GIF is characterized by its small size, relatively clear imaging, support for transparent background images, and is suitable for a variety of operating systems.

The principle of dynamic GIF is to save multiple images into one image file to form animation, such as those dynamic emoticons in your WeChat↓↓↓

04TIFF

TIFF translates as Tagged Image File Format. It is a flexible bitmap format mainly used to store images including photos and artwork. TIFF files edited with Photoshop can save paths and layers, and are larger than the previously mentioned formats.

Not only design students are familiar with it, but programmers GG also often deal with it because its scalability supports cross-use between Mac and Windows systems.
