The release of peace doves is a traditional part of the end of all large-scale celebrations. Many people's memories of the celebrations include this image: thousands of peace doves soaring into the sky and gradually disappearing under the clear sky of Beijing. This year, 100,000 peace doves were released in Tiananmen Square, the largest number in history. Where do so many peace doves come from? Flying to where?
The first "special performer" to return home
Mr. Ge lives in Xincun Street, Fengtai District, Beijing, about 20 kilometers away from Tiananmen Square and about 40 minutes by car. It only takes ten minutes for the peace dove he raised to fly from the heart of the motherland to the sky and then to his nest. Mr. Ge said with a smile that these pigeons may be the first special group of performers to return home from participating in the event. "These pigeons stayed in the square all night. Some of them were thirsty or hungry. After being released, they flew home quickly. They arrived in a minute or two at the fastest." Mr. Ge said.

Where did the 100,000 peace doves come from?
In 1982, the Beijing Pigeon Association was established. In 1985, Mr. Ge became one of them. His membership card has been replaced several times, and each one is covered with commemorative medals for participating in various activities. Over the years, every large-scale event in Beijing that requires the release of peace doves has been provided free of charge by members of the Beijing Homing Pigeon Association, and most of Ge Lao and his pigeons will also participate.
More than a month ago, Mr. Ge and his "pigeon fanciers" received a "new task" - to provide "domestic pigeons" for the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China. Mr. Ge told reporters from CCTV that the peace doves released on the day of the event came from more than 3,000 pigeon fanciers from 16 districts in Beijing. During the period of collecting pigeons, members actively signed up. Mr. Ge said that at first, the association was worried that it would be difficult to collect 100,000 pigeons. However, after the staff conducted a home survey, they found that the number of pigeons that members were willing to provide far exceeded the number. Predetermined plan.
How to avoid getting lost on the way home?
The breed commonly referred to as the "peace dove" is actually a homing pigeon. They have "self-guided navigation" and have extremely strong homing capabilities. However, Sun Peng, secretary-general of the Beijing Homing Pigeon Association, told CCTV reporters that even if the homing pigeons are talented, they still need a lot of training to avoid getting lost.

Sun Peng introduced that there are two main types of pigeon training, one is called "home flying" and the other is called "training and releasing". The so-called "home flying" is to release homing pigeons at members' homes. The pigeons will hover and fly near the home, and then fly back home soon. "Training" is to send the pigeons to a place some distance away from home, and let them fly home. The distance is from near to far, starting from 10 kilometers, and gradually increasing to 50 kilometers, 100 kilometers, 200 kilometers, and 300 kilometers. kilometers, 400 kilometers or even further.
Not only every participating pigeon is the treasure of pigeon fanciers, but every flying vehicle has also been carefully modified. Sun Peng said: "The structure of the release cage is quite special. It has 9 floors in total, and the release doors on all 9 floors are connected in series through a linked lever. Only one handle can open all 9 cage doors at once. ”
Who releases the dove of peace?
In the past, the release work was carried out by professional and experienced flyers, but this release was carried out by students from the Beijing Police Academy. Sun Peng revealed that the main reason why students were chosen for the celebrations was because young people had a strong willingness and enthusiasm to participate in the celebrations.
Starting from mid-May, the Pigeon Association has conducted two weeks of professional training for trainees from the Police Academy. Although the students lacked experience, they had strong learning abilities and quickly mastered the essentials. After more than a month of training, the trainees were fully prepared for the technical essentials of flying, pigeon habits and emergency response.

This morning (July 1), under the unified instructions of the flag bearer, 64 flyers skillfully opened the pigeon cages, and 100,000 peace doves took to the sky, hovering briefly over the Monument to the People's Heroes, and then headed east, west, north, and south. Scattered around, every participant is immersed in their own special emotions.
Sun Peng told reporters from China Central Broadcasting Corporation that from the beginning of collecting pigeons, to determining the meeting point, to formulating routes, plans, preparing emergency plans, etc., it is inseparable from the close cooperation of the Beijing Municipal Sports Bureau, the traffic control department and other departments. He said that he had done a lot of preparations and had taken all the difficulties into consideration, and when it came time to actually fly, he felt very calm.
On June 30, pigeon fanciers including Mr. Ge were briefly separated from their beloved pigeons. On July 1, 100,000 peace pigeons flew back to their nests one after another.
For a long time to come, people's memories of this special day will have a few seconds of blue sky, white clouds, and doves of peace, and Mr. Ge's memory will also have a piece of it that will always belong to this day.
