In order to guide enterprises to standardize the labeling of formula foods for special medical purposes (hereinafter referred to as special medical foods) and guide doctors, clinical nutritionists and consumers to scientifically and rationally use special medical foods, the State Administration for Market Regulation has recently formulated and issued the "Formulas for Special Medical Purposes" Food Labeling Guidelines" (hereinafter referred to as the "Guidelines"). The "Guidelines" are divided into five parts, including basic requirements, content requirements, main display layout requirements, prohibitive requirements and other requirements.

Special Medical food labeling refers to the general term for words, symbols, numbers, patterns and other descriptions printed, pasted, labeled or attached to the packaging of the smallest sales unit of special medical food to identify and explain the basic information, characteristics or attributes of the food. Includes label and instructions. The "Guide" emphasizes that the labeling of special medical food should comply with relevant laws, regulations, rules and national food safety standards. If it involves the content of the special medical food registration certificate, it should be consistent with the content of the registration certificate. The "Guidelines" require that labels and instructions should be true and standardized, scientifically accurate, easy to understand, clear and legible, and should not contain false, exaggerated or absolute language.
The "Guidelines" systematically summarize the 13 items that need to be marked on the labels and instructions of special medical food, refine the font requirements of enterprises for product names, trade names and trademarks, and clarify specific comprehensive requirements. The clinical trial labeling requirements for nutritional formula foods put forward the requirements for the content font and warning wording of "warning statements and precautions". In view of the current problem that the main display layout of some products has complicated labeling contents, which is not conducive to clear identification by consumers, the "Guidelines" clearly put forward the contents that should be labeled on the main display layout, and proposed for the first time that the minimum sales package of special medical food should be marked with the exclusive logo of special medical food. Little blue flower”. The logo should be marked in the upper left corner or upper right corner of the main display page of the label, and can be changed according to the style and proportion. Non-Special Medical Food must not use or misappropriate the Special Medical Food logo.
The "Guidelines" combine the registration management practices in recent years to clarify the content (except net content, specifications and flavors), format and color of the labels of the same special medical food produced by the same company. It should be consistent to facilitate consumers to clearly identify and purchase special medical foods; it is emphasized that labels and instructions must not make functional claims about nutrients in the product to avoid misleading consumers. In addition, from the perspective of safe use of special medical food, some product warning instructions and precautions have been added. The "Guidelines" also prohibit labels and instructions from containing false, exaggerated, disease prevention, treatment, health care functions, etc.
The "Guidelines" are technical guidance documents that aim to standardize the corporate labeling of special medical food, guide doctors, clinical nutritionists and consumers to use it scientifically and rationally, and further enhance the whole society's awareness of special medical food.
