Mr. Lu Xun’s calligraphy is soft yet strong

Lu Xun, a great modern Chinese writer and translator and the founder of the New Literature Movement. His original name was Zhou Shuren, his courtesy name was Hencai, and he was a native of Shaoxing, Zhejiang. His handwritten banner "Mourning for Dingjun" was praised by calligrapher Shen Yinmo as "the best piece of calligraphy written by Lu Xun in his life".

The original size is 36 × 24 centimeters, untitled, vertically written from the right, with four lines of poetry, followed by the inscription "Mr. Tao Xuan teaches correction" and the signature "Lu Xun", with a white square seal of "Lu Xun". In the lower right corner of the ink mark, there is a white collection seal with "Jiaodong Cao Man's Seal".

In May 1933, left-wing writer Ding Ling was arrested and no news was heard from her, and it was rumored that she was murdered. Lu Xun was very sad and angry after hearing this, and wrote the poem "Mourning for Dingjun". On June 28, Zhou Taoxuan, who was living in Hangzhou at that time, asked Yu Dafu to ask Lu Xun for calligraphy, and Lu Xun wrote this calligraphy.

After liberation, due to various reasons, Zhou Taoxuan transferred this calligraphy to Xiling Seal Society. Cao Manzhi once served as the first deputy secretary-general of the Shanghai Municipal Government and was also in charge of the Civil Affairs Bureau. He actively participated in the relocation of Lu Xun's tomb. He died of illness in Shanghai in July 1991. When he recalled the origin of this banner during his lifetime, he said that he admired and loved Lu Xun very much throughout his life. During the Anti-Japanese War, he ran two Lu Xun middle schools and six Lu Xun primary schools in Jiaodong. In 1962, while he was recuperating in Hangzhou, the Zhejiang Provincial Party Committee sent someone to negotiate with him, and he was willing to exchange some calligraphy and paintings from Xiling Seal Society for the calligraphy of Xu Wenchang, a calligrapher and painter of the Ming Dynasty, which he collected and was the only one in the country. He chose this piece of Lu Xun's handwriting "Mourning for Ding Jun".

Cao Manzhi said before his death that he would eventually donate this handwriting to the Lu Xun Memorial Hall in Shanghai. This time, his wife Cai Zhiyong’s selfless donation fulfilled his unfulfilled wish.

In fact, Lu Xun was extremely accomplished in calligraphy. In his early years, he copied ancient steles for a long time and was keen on searching for rubbings of inscriptions and inscriptions. He had a high appreciation for calligraphy and fine arts. His calligraphy is quaint and thick, full of literary charm.
