This black clay pot was unearthed in Chenghu, Zhejiang. Chenghu Lake is located about 15 kilometers southeast of Suzhou City. It is a medium-sized lake on the Taihu Plain. According to ancient local chronicles, this lake was once a densely populated city, but later it was slowly submerged by water and sank to the bottom of the lake. In 1974, the former Chefang Commune of Wuxian County built farmland around the lake on the west bank of Chenghu Lake. After the lake was drained, people discovered a large number of ancient wells at the bottom of the lake. Only then did the mysterious town that had been dormant for thousands of years reappear. The cultural relics unit investigated, excavated and collected more than 1,200 relics, covering the Neolithic Songze Culture, Liangzhu Culture, Maqiao Culture, and historical periods such as the Shang and Zhou Dynasties, Han Jin, Tang and Song Dynasties, with a time span of 5,000 years.
