IBM’s official website announced the list of winners of the 2022 IBM PhD Scholarship: a total of 19 students around the world have won the award, including 8 Chinese students, nearly half.

According to IBM, the IBM doctoral scholarship was first established in 1951. The IBM doctoral scholarship is mainly for research fields such as artificial intelligence, hybrid cloud technology, quantum computing, data science, and security. Ph.D. students, it has been 71 years now, and has supported thousands of outstanding doctoral students from all over the world.

Bo Zhang

Bo Zhang graduated from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2018 with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. He is currently studying for a PhD in EE at Columbia University and is affiliated withColumbia University's Large Scale Integrated Circuit Laboratory (VLSILab), who studied under Mingoo Seok, can be said to be the fourth generation disciple of Taiwan EDA master Hu Zhengming.

He mainly studies computer architecture applied to machine learning algorithms, as well as ultra-low energy consumption large-scale integrated circuit and system design. In recent years, the exchanges between artificial intelligence and large-scale integrated circuits have become increasingly close, and VLSILab, to which Bo Zhang is affiliated, has also done a lot of work in related directions. Currently, he has published 5 research papers inthe field of integrated circuits.

Catherine Chen

Catherine Chen graduated from Princeton University in 2018 with a bachelor's degree in computer science, and minored in neuroscience, statistics and machine learning, and applied mathematics. She then worked as a researcher at the University of Munich in Germany One year of research on causal reasoning and neuroscience, currently studying for a PhD in EECS at UC Berkeley, studying under NLP masters Dan Klein (who just won the ACL 2022 Best Paper Award) and Jack Gallant.

She is affiliated with the BAIR Laboratory, a famous artificial intelligence laboratory at Berkeley. Her doctoral career is funded by the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship. Ching-Yao Chuang

Ching-Yao Chuang graduated from the National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan in 2017 with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. He is currently studying for a PhD in EECS atMIT, studying under the tutelage of Stefanie Jegelka and Antonio Torralba. MIT's famous artificial intelligence laboratory - CSAIL.

According to reports, his research goal is to build a robust and general machine learning system with minimal supervision. In addition, he is particularly interested in representation learning, unsupervised learning and statistical learning theory. In addition to school work, he has interned in the machine learning group of the University of Toronto, IBM's artificial intelligence research group and Microsoft Research. Fangzheng Xu

Fangzheng Xu received his bachelor's and master's degrees in computer science from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2016 and 2019 respectively. His master's tutor was Zhu Qili. He is currently working in the language technology department atCarnegie Mellon University Studying for a PhD at the Institute (No. 1 in NLP in the world)Under the tutelage of Graham Neubig. Previously, Xu interned at Microsoft Research Asia, Microsoft Redmond Headquarters and Google Research.

According to his personal homepage, Fangzheng Xu’s current research content combines natural language and software engineering. His research goal is to enable machine learning systems to capture the program and intent semantics of natural language commands. And by combining these two completely different domain languages, users are expected to use natural language to guide computers in the future. Ka Ho Chow

Ka Ho Chow graduated from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology with a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in computer science. He once did scientific research at the Multimedia Technology Research Center of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. His mentor was S.-H. Gary Chan. Currently, He is pursuing a PhD in CS at Georgia Institute of Technology, where he studies under Ling Liu and is affiliated with the Distributed Data Intensive Systems Laboratory (DiSL). Previously, he worked in the storage system research group of IBM Research Almaden Branch, promoting the implementation of machine learning in industrial systems.

Yangruibo Ding

Yangruibo Ding graduated from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China in Chengdu and is currently studying for a PhD in CS at Columbia University, studying under Baishakhi Ray and Gail Kaiser. Previously worked as an intern at IBM Research Institute.

His main research direction is machine learning applied to software engineering automation, and he is particularly interested in self-supervised source code and deep learning applied to program analysis. Yufeng Bright Ye

Yufeng Ye graduated from the University of Toronto with a bachelor's degree in engineering physics. He is currently studying for a PhD at MIT, studying under Kevin P.
