Introduction: As the basis of a play, a professional script can make every process of film production smooth and smooth. The management will be tempted by it, the producer will be relieved by it, the director will feel comfortable by it, and the actors will be attentive by it. . So what kind of script is a truly professional script?

We have Aaron Sorkin, Oscar winner for Best Adapted Screenplay! ——’s award-winning work “The Social Network” is used as an example to explain the professional format of script writing!

This is a photocopy of the script of "The Social Network". The entire script is 162 pages long. According to Hollywood's unbreakable rules, one page of script requires one minute of play, and this script greatly exceeds With a running time limit of 120minutes, the script was handed over to director David Fincher, who said: “This script is not long at all.”

Fincher asked Sorkin to read the script at the speed he expected when writing it. It took Aaron Sorkin a full 120 minutes to read it, so the script was filmed without changing one page, and the finished film was no more, no less. At 120 minutes, it can be said that this script is the ultimate embodiment of Hollywood professionalism.

First is the font. The font in the script is CourierNew, a 12-point font. You can find it in your Word software. Courier font is the font used by old printers. This font is the tradition and iron rule of Hollywood screenwriters. It is the appropriate font size that ensures the regularity of a one-minute play.

When we write in Chinese, we generally use size 12 boldface. Due to the characteristics of Chinese, it is difficult to guarantee that one page will take exactly one minute to write. If you have obsessive-compulsive disorder, you can use the next piece of paper after writing one minute of play (containing about 150 to 180 words of dialogue). Currently, many major domestic productions use this card-style screenwriting format. Director Jiang Wen I am a big fan of this writing method.

Believe me, writing a one-minute play ona piece of paper will make it easier to discuss and revise the script, and it will definitely improve the efficiency of the entire crew.

Below, we will explain one by one the six script elements marked in red numbers in the "Social Network" example.

1, scene description (Scene Direction) and character action (Action). This sentence usually appears below the scene title (number 6 in the picture) and is used to provide a necessary description of the scene and explain the actor's ongoing behavior.

Points: When the character's name first appears in the scene description, it should be capitalized in English (there is a long scene description under serial number 6 in the picture, we can see Mark Zuckerberg's name in capital letters ), Chinese should be bold;

Don't have too many non-visual descriptions. Make sure what you write can be seen. Literary descriptions such as "the wind in May is a little sad" and "the air is filled with the fragrance of earth" can only make the director happy. Crazy. If you must describe the actor's psychological state, use as concise and accurate words as possible to describe it;

There can be no description of lens usage or camera positions. That is the job of the camera operator and director. If you are the director, stay in the storyboard and write it later.

Example: Police officer 633 stood at the intersection and walked towards a small shop selling late-night snacks not far away.

2, character name (Character Cue). It is the name of the character. If it is a supporting role, you can write "Kidnapper A", "Song Bing B", etc.

If there is dialogue below a character's name, make the name bold.

3, Dialogue (Dialogue). Lines spoken by characters, including voice-overs, monologues, and narrations, are all lines.

4, auxiliary description (Parenthetical). (V.O.) means (voice-over). The voice-over and foreign voice should be marked after the character's name, while other instructions are marked below the character's name, which can briefly describe the character's actions or status. For example, "coughing", "crying", "excitedly".

The auxiliary description should not be too long. If it is too long, write an action in the format of serial number 1;

5. Transition method. That is, the way to switch between pictures. We often say fade in, fade out, dissolve in, and merge. They are all transition methods. Mark them out when necessary. Generally, you don’t need to write them down.

Transition methods must be bold and capitalized in English.

6, scene title (Slug Line). INT is equivalent to "内" in Chinese scripts, which represents interior scenes. Hollywood's format is " Interior / Exterior scenes —Place —Time”, the general format in China is “Time —Within /Exteriors—Location “. Habits vary, both are fine.

In Hollywood scripts, scene titles cannot be written with scene numbers, such as scene one, scene two... because the director decides the shooting order of each scene. In Japanese scripts, only serial numbers are written, while domestic scripts have scene numbers marked. The habit of numbering, but in fact, the scene number has no effect in actual shooting, as long as the serial number is marked;

The time includes day, night, dusk, early morning, etc. The arrangement must be consistent with common sense and not too extreme. If all the scenes are arranged at dusk because the light is beautiful at dusk, the director and producer will go crazy.

The above is the standard format for writing scripts. Of course, to become an excellent screenwriter, the most important thing is to shape the characters and control the story. A good format can give your script a beautiful appearance, but it also depends on A touching story to back it up.
