As a German highway, the FFDIN® family font, used in the signage system of the Center Pompidou and the Eiffel Tower, is undoubtedly a font that is popular and well-received around the world. This article interviews Albert-Jan and Inka Strotmann, the key figures in the creation of this font. Let’s take you through the birth of a popular English font.

What is DIN?
DIN is the abbreviation of the German Standards Institute, Deutsches Institutfür Normung. Since 1975, the German government has adopted DIN as the national standard system, and DIN is also the competent authority for German standards. The German Standards Institute was founded in 1917 and is headquartered in Berlin. The DIN standard is widely used internationally and in Europe and represents German interests. DIN font is an alternative among Western fonts. It is not just a font, but also belongs to a huge national standard system, representing an idea of standardizing simple solutions.

Spiekermann knew that Pool's boss was bankrupt, and he told Pool that if he was willing to do some font design for a living, he should first look at OCR and DIN fonts. At the same time, he invited Pool to go to Berlin to discuss the details. A year later, Fontshop released the typeface designed by Pool: FF

It is undeniable that Albert-JanPool’s FFDIN® family font is an iconic family font in the FontFont library. The birth of this font occurred after ErikSpiekermann and Albert-Jan had an exchange while taking a taxi together. Albert-Jan listened to ErikSpiekermann’s opinions and re-examined the serious and dull DIN1451mittelschrift and engschrift font. With the recent addition of two new weights - slim and ultra-light, FFDIN has become an authentic European family font that supports Greek, Latin and Cyrillic alphabets. I interviewed Albert-Jan and Inka Strotmann, who likes to call herself an “invisible little helper,” but whose contributions to the typeface were both Key to production and development.
