Iconic '80s computer Commodore 64 returns with full-featured keyboard

Modern versions of the iconic console have gained popularity in recent years, but this latest rebirth is sure to resonate with early PC owners.

Manufacturer Retro Games announced this week that it is developing an updated version of the beloved Commodore 64 8-bit computer that launched in 1982 and sold for $595 at the time. The song was parodied in the trailer for Netflix's hit 80s-themed series Stranger Things.

The computer, called THEC64, is a more complete replica of the mini-computer released by Retro Games last year. The latest offering features a full-size retro keyboard, a classic joystick and a selection of classic games, including Speedball and Cyberdyne Warrior. When it goes on sale in early December, it will cost $199.99.

Original 64-bit computers from the 1980s

In the early to mid-1980s, the bulky, tan Commodore 64 computer brought personal computing to millions of users. People are using their C64s for everything from basic office functions to original games like Impossible Mission. Its memory is limited to 64 kb - about the size of a very long email.

Commodore International has sold more than 17 million C64 systems, according to manufacturer Commodore International. The Guinness Book of World Records lists the Commodore 64 as the best-selling computer model of all time.

Retro Games originally raised money for the computer through an IndieGoGo crowdfunding campaign in 2016, but it ultimately fell short of its goal. With the popularity of other retro mini consoles like the NES and SNES Classic, the team refocused their efforts on developing and releasing the C64 Mini.

But the retro keyboard that comes with the C64 mini console is purely for show. The team corrected that decision and installed a fully functional keyboard on top of a full-size keyboard.
