JetBrains launched a new font at the beginning of the year, JetBrains Mono, which is specially designed for developers.

JetBrains said:

We, as developers, spend most of our time looking at code. We're always looking for the best fonts to make it easier for us to view text on screen. However, the logic in many popular fonts doesn't always take into account the difference between reading through code and reading a book. Our eyes move along code in very different ways, often having to move vertically and horizontally, unlike reading a book because they always follow the text in the same direction slide.

We took this into account compared to some other fonts. For example, Consolas has slightly wider letters. However, they are still small, forcing you to increase the size a bit to make the font more readable. As a result, lines of code often take longer to run than expected. And JetBrains Mono's standard-width letters help keep the line spacing at the expected length. This approach keeps lines of code as long as developers expect, and helps improve rendering since each letter takes up more pixels.

Therefore, when developing with JetBrains Mono, we focused, among other things, on issues that can cause eye strain during prolonged use of code. We considered issues such as the size and shape of the letters; the amount of space between them, naturally balanced in a monospaced font design; some seemingly unnecessary details and unclear distinctions between symbols, such as I and l; and and programmatic ligatures when developing fonts.

From version 2019.3, the JetBrains Mono font will be shipped with the IDE.
