MORISAWA Co., Ltd. (Representative Director President:Akihiko Morisawa Headquarters:2-6-25 Shikitsu Higashi, Naniwa-ku, Osaka City Tel: 06-6649-2151 representative number, hereinafter referred to as Morisawa) announced the results of the "Type Design Contest 2019".
The "Type Design Competition 2019" aims to pursue a typeface design full of new expressiveness and challenging spirit, and is held together with the jury members representing all walks of life. The acceptance period is from November 1, 2018 to January 31, 2019. A total of 813 works (258 from the Japanese department and 555 from the Owen department) from 53 countries and regions in the world are recruited, which is the most since it was first held in 2012 .
The selection meeting will be held on May 15th and 16th in the lobby of Morisawa Co., Ltd. head office. After two days of selection, the "Morisawa Awards" in the Japanese and Owen departments focused on originality and aesthetic works, and selected one Gold Award, one Silver Award, one Bronze Award and three outstanding works. Issei Kitagawa, Osamu Torinoumi, Ryoko Nishizuka, and Masaaki Hiromura will be awarded the Morisawa Award for Japanese and Ilya Ruderman, Indra Kupferschmid, Cyrus Highsmith, and Laura Meseguer for the Owen category of the Morisawa Award. As a jury member, the special reviewer is Matthew Carter.
In addition, the "Fan Voting" has been voted by the general public online to determine the first and second works. The "Akashi Award" is awarded to works with a high degree of completion and proposal power. Although no winning works were selected this year, 16 winning works have been selected from the four categories of the Morisawa Award and fan voting. .
A collection of award-winning works and judges' comments is expected to be published in the fall of 2019. Also, the award ceremony will be held at Kanda Myojin Hall (Tokyo) on September 3, 2019. Detailed information and registration methods will be announced on the official website of the font design competition in the future.

In this recruitment theme "Variable Fonts", we have received 28 entries from all over the world. Whether it is Japanese fonts or European fonts, there are various proposals from practicality to conceptuality. Various works. A big thank you to everyone who participated in our first attempt at setting a theme.
The selection of all works is carried out under the operation of the designers and engineers of Morisawa Co., Ltd. There are many works that have unique changes when the cursor is moved, but because they cannot form a font with an intermediate weight, they do not meet the evaluation criteria that can be used as variable fonts. In addition, even if the work has a high degree of completion, the number of axes and the width of the development were compared with the novelty and creativity that were the criteria for the review, and no final selection was selected.
In the future, we will strive to make this competition a place to discover and showcase new works, and please continue to support us.
