Fonts are the most common problem that everyone encounters. I have posted many articles related to fonts before, but some of them are relatively simple to explain. In the past two days, several people have asked about fonts. I decided to rearrange some of the content before posting in groups.

When opening a CAD drawing, it often prompts that the font is missing, or the shape is not defined, etc. This is because CAD cannot find the font used in the drawing under the searchable path. When encountering this kind of problem, open the text style dialog box ST, check which fonts are not found, and then go online to see if you can download the missing characters. This official account also shares 2000 fonts, but these font libraries do not recommend all Copy it to the font directory of CAD, but copy what you want to use.

However, in order to distinguish special fonts from other fonts, many individuals and units will change the name of the font, which leads to many different names for the same font. No matter how many font libraries you download, there is no guarantee that you will be able to find the problem for the drawings. In this case, we can only choose a font that can ensure that the text is displayed normally to replace the missing problem. If there are many drawings in a batch and the fonts used are similar, is it possible to set the font to be replaced automatically, without having to reset it for each drawing. The answer is yes.

1. Set a default replacement font

In fact, CAD has already set the replacement font by default, and this font can be set directly in the option dialog box.

Enter OP and press Enter, open the "Options" dialog box, click to the "File" tab, click the plus sign in front of "Text Editor, Dictionary and Font File Name", and you can see "Replace Font File", As shown below.

The default replacement font for CAD is simplex.shx, and we can modify it to other fonts according to our needs.

If you set the CAD font *.SHX like the default replacement font, you can only choose a small font. When the Chinese characters in the picture need to be used in large fonts and cannot be found, the Chinese characters in the single-line text still cannot be displayed normally. If we have no requirements for the font, we can set the replacement font to Song or Fang Song. Click the browse button on the right to pop up the font selection dialog box, as shown in the figure below.

The replacement font is stored in the variable FONTALT, so we can also set the value of the variable to set the replacement font. For example: Enter FONTALT and press Enter, enter "Arial" and press Enter, you can set the replacement font to Arial.

2. Set font mapping file

The introduction of replacing font files mentioned above, in fact, there is a "Font Mapping File" under "Replace Font Files" in the Options dialog box, which can better complete the task of automatically replacing fonts, as shown in the figure below.

In the option dialog box, you can see the directory and name of the font mapping file, and of course you can also browse and define an edited font mapping file.

If we have a batch of drawings and the same fonts are used in the drawings, and these fonts cannot be found or we need to uniformly replace these fonts with other fonts, we can set the font mapping file. The extension of the font mapping file is *.fmp , this is a plain text file, you only need to write the name of the font to be replaced in front, and write the name of the replaced font file in the back, separated by a semicolon in the middle, as shown in the figure.

We can see that some fonts have been set in the default font mapping file of AUTOCAD, which may be set according to the changes in fonts and reading fonts after the upgrade of the early CAD and WINDOWS operating systems. We will not encounter these default items at all. You can delete and add the replacement items we need, or you can add replacement items directly below. We can set multiple fonts to replace with one font. In this mapping file, small fonts, large fonts, and WINDOWS fonts can all be set.

In fact, it is not necessary to modify the default font mapping file of CAD. We edit a file by ourselves, save it as *.fmp, and then specify it as the mapping file we defined in the option dialog box. We can also use multiple mapping files to set different replacement strategies for different types of drawings.

We can also use the FONTMAP variable to set the font mapping file used, the variable is usually used in some secondary development programs, we can set it directly in the option dialog box

Whether and how to set the replacement font file and font mapping file depends on your text display and printing effect requirements. If you just look at the picture, there is no requirement for the font effect. In many cases, it is enough to set the replacement font to Song or imitation Song. If there are some special rebar symbols, a specific font file must be used.

There is also a so-called universal font on the Internet, which can display Chinese and various symbols by replacing it with this font. I haven't tried it, so I don't know how it works.
