Helvetica is a sans-serif font designed by Swiss font designer Max Miedinger in 1957. It is widely used because of its easy identification and easy readability. Since its launch, the Helvetica font has undergone several adjustments. The most important one was digitized in 1983 and became the Helvetica Neue font, which unified the structure, thickness, and width of the font. Recently, Monotype, the oldest font design company in the world, once again changed the face of the Helvetica font and launched a new Helvetica Now font.
This is the first update of the Helvetica font in 35 years. From planning to design in December 2014, a total of dozens of designers and engineers under Monotype were used to complete it. The reason why I want to adjust the Helvetica font again is mainly to meet the needs of today’s designers. After adjustment, Helvetica Now font has three sizes: micro (micro), print (text), display (display), the design team for each Characters can be redrawn, modified, and a variety of options are available. The font size of micro is suitable for small screens, the font size of display is suitable for signboards, and the specification of text is the standard size of written materials. The font spacing under each size is different for users and readers. Provides a better writing (or is it better typing?) and reading experience.
Helvetica is regarded as a typical representative of modernism in the font design industry. The font characteristics allow people to focus on text presentation rather than font design details. It is widely used in the graphic design industry, and even Apple is also a favorite, such as iPhone. And other devices also set Helvetica Neue as the English default font in IOS 7 and 8, and it was not replaced by its self-developed font until IOS 9. Designer Chris Do said:“The font feels familiar, but to the trained eye, there are slight differences that can be seen, such as the weight of R Increase, I love it!”
For those who are interested, you may wish to download the Helvetica Now font from the Monotype website, and try the charm of Helvetica Now for yourself!
