1. Why there is a question mark in the CAD file
1. Understand the CAD font file format
To solve this kind of problem, we must first understand the font file. CAD has two font files available, one is the CAD-specific shx font, and the other is the system-wide ttf font.

Then CAD divides shx files into three types:
(1) Small font files used to display single-byte symbols such as numbers and English;
(2) Large font files for displaying Chinese characters, Japanese and other double-byte characters;
(3) The symbol shape file specially saves some graphic symbols used for special graphics such as line type.

2. The reason for the question mark in the file
Why do I see a question mark when I open a file?
(1) When opening the drawing, it cannot be displayed due to the lack of large and small fonts
(2) There is this font, but the software version is different, and the definition of some characters is missing, so that the file displays the characters as question marks.
2. How to solve the problem mark in the file
1. Select the appropriate font for replacement
The best way to solve the problem is to ask the sender to send you the font file together, and select a suitable font file to replace according to the prompt when opening the file. Reasonably judge the missing font files, because there are only a few types of small fonts, and there are few domestic users, so the missing font files are usually large fonts and symbolic files.

Large font files can be uniformly replaced with fonts such as hztxt.shx or hzfs.txt, which are fonts used by many people; if it is a symbol shape file, it will always prompt that it is not the correct symbol shape file after selecting the replacement. You can see if the file suffix is: aaa.shx, gdt.shx, ltypeshp.shx, these cannot be easily replaced.

When you lack the fonts of the file sent by the other party, you open the drawing, and the AutoCAD software will tell you that the fonts are missing and ask you to choose another one.

2. Font substitution
At this time, the most convenient thing for us is to find a similar font to replace, for example, select gbcbig.shx in the picture (as shown below).

After clicking OK, if the font replacement is successful and no garbled characters appear again, it means that the problem has been solved, otherwise the problem still exists, let's try another method.

1. Font mapping file
If you often cannot find fonts after opening due to similar problems, we can set up a font mapping file, so that certain fonts will be mapped to existing fonts on our computer after the drawing is opened.

The CAD mapping file is 【*.fmp】, the AutoCAD mapping file is called 【acad.fmp】, this file is a plain text file, you can use Notepad Open the editor and add one when you encounter one. For example, you can map all Chinese characters to hztxt.shx, as shown in the following table:

2. Appropriate font replacement
When choosing an alternative font, try changing another font. If it still cannot be displayed completely, take the missing font file from the person who sent the picture, and then put it in the corresponding folder directory, such as C:ProgramFilesAutodeskAutoCAD 2018Fonts, Then restart the AutoCAD software to open the drawing.
